Celebrating 5 Years Of Restoring Instrumental Music Programs

In its fifth year, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has emerged as a national force dedicated to restoring public school music education programs, and advocating for the important role music education plays in the educational development of all children. Buttressed by a significant body of research showing the link between music programs and improved school performance, the Foundation continues to respond to the crisis created by accelerating program cuts in public schools across the country. This includes program cuts which have increased due to three key factors: 1) the heavy emphasis on improving reading and math scores, 2) the dramatic funding cuts at the state and local level due to the economic downturn, and 3) the significant lack of music education in major urban school districts serving at-risk youth. In most urban school districts a startling 2/3 of the public schools DO NOT have music education. VH1 Save The Music has tackled approaching these issues with on-air programming, successful partnerships, nation-wide media and advocacy efforts, and supporting federal legislation. Furthermore, the Foundation worked with local school districts to design comprehensive plans to rebuild music programs across entire communities by creating the tools and materials to empower local advocates for making compelling cases to support these programs.

Using VH1's reach into 82 million homes in conjunction with VH1 affiliate partners across the country, VH1 Save The Music created a new series of PSAs entitled "Disappear" to visualize the elimination of music in our public schools. In addition, a weeklong nationwide instrument drive with the CBS EARLY SHOW was created that involved local VH1 and CBS affiliates as well as Infinity Broadcasting radio stations with collection points in 200 communities to help localize this issue. The campaign also benefited from a star studded VH1 DIVAS LAS VEGAS concert special, which raised both awareness and more than $1.3 million. As part of advocacy efforts, the Foundation created a special "Music Education Advocacy Kit" featuring a special news report about the state of music education and presenting the favoring views of the U.S. Secretary of Education in regards to maintaining music education. Legislative efforts including presentations to the U.S. Senate and testimony before the U.S. House Education Committee (presented by Sesame Street's Elmo) was part of an over all effort that was capped with the codifying of music and arts education in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002. Most importantly, the Foundation has been working hand in hand with 75 major urban school districts to help them develop plans and strategies to restore music programs.

Results for the Foundation have been extraordinary. The VH1 Save The Music Foundation has restored programs in more than 160 schools through the donation
$4 million worth of instruments. Efforts to restore music programs across entire school districts were completed in Buffalo, NY; Newark, NJ; and Atlanta, GA and
have been launch in Baltimore, MD; Milwaukee WI; and Chicago, IL. Since it's inception the Foundation has restored programs in 900 schools based in 75 communities through the donation of $21 million worth of musical instruments bringing music programs back to more than 400,000 children. Education leaders have recognized VH1 Save The Music across the country as the most significant music or arts education advocacy program in existence.

have a fantastic day.Diane

You took the words right out of my mouth, hotforscott!! Speaking as a person who was involved in music from the time I was in elementary - high school, I think it's a wonderful thing to make sure schools continue music eduction as well as art classes. I feel that it's a great creative outlet for kids and now maybe more than ever, kids need that. Just my opinion.

You are right, I think it is VERY important. There are not many things anymore that almost all kids relate to. I think music is something that is important to a lot of kids and there are so many things that can be expressed with music and through music that kids have a hard time expressing otherwise.

Same here. I don't know what I would have done had I not been in my high school chorus. It saved my a** on more than one occasion. Kids need creative outlets.

I know what you guys mean. It is very important. I feel kids need that outlet. I know I always stayed busy as a child and teenager with different activities that it kept me from being exposed to a lot of harmful things.

Eddie Vedder started as a singer, and later picked up a guitar, also...
