Anyone Here Play VIOLIN?
I am seriously contemplating buying one. I've been thinking about it for awhile now and I cannot play any instruments at all. Well, maybe the harmonica. But I know music theory and I can site read ok. I just think it's such a haunting sound.

No, I don't play and I don't know anyone who plays. It is a beautiful instrument, though.

I don't play any instruments either. I think that would be a neat one to learn though.

I want to learn to play cello. Its my favourite instrument and I think the sounds it makes are incredible.
If you do learn the violin, make sure to learn classical stuff, not the whiney blue grass type stuff. |

That would be cool Amy, you should do it! I myself took piano for 7 years and had the typical recitals etc... then I played saxaphone for awhile too, I love music! You should do it for sure, I could see you with a fiddle!

I don't play the violin but I love it and I've always wanted to learn, expecially after seeing the movie Music of the Heart with Meryl Streep. I went out and bought some classical violin music, that movie really inspired me! But I have taken guitar and piano lessons. When I was in school I played the clarinet for awhile then the flute in the band. I think you'd do a great job playing the violin, Aimee!! I say, Do It!!

Jen- Yes a fiddle is what I was thinking, but I don't know the difference.
marlsy-Do you know the difference between fiddle & violin? I have heard that violin is hard to play and I have always wanted to play piano. But, being a small person with tiny hands and such, I think the violin would fit me better. PS Yummy Pic in your avatar Sheila-That's the second new thing we could do together!!! Strubes says: My mom plays first violin in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Well, I am very interested in that because I grew up in Flint and was very involved in the cultural center. Flint Central was a magnet High School that pooled AMAZING talent the years I was there. One of my very good friends there played violin and I'm sure she had a goal to play for the DSO. I haven't spoken to Joi since we graduated, but wouldn't it be awesome if your mom knows her! PM Me!!!

^^^Ha, funny...
But I found out that there is no difference between a fiddle and a violin, it's just the style of music you play. And I wonder if I would like the sound of a viola better than a violin. I didn't buy one, but I held it and ran the bow across the strings (with apologies of course). The sound is sooo cool! I will get one for sure.

Yes, I play violin! :P Sorry i didn't notice this thread earlier... I took lessons for six years but then i quit to concentrate on school. I still like to play, but i don't get to very often cos i don't have the time. I was first violinist in my primary school  he he and then i joined the Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra and we did lots of concerts and stuff. I wish i could play more and i REALLY REALLY wish i could join another orchestra, i've been thinking i might do that once i finish school.
Aimee, it is a hard instrument to play, and you never stop learning, there's just so much stuff! But it's heaps fun once you get the hang of it, and being able to read music, you've got an advantage. Is that treble clef you know? If so, it should be heaps easier. PS definetely stay away from the hickey country stuff, but give jazz a try as well, it's not as well known with violin but it's still pretty good, something different from classical all the time.

Mel-
Thanks. Why do you advise me to stay away from the country stuff? Does it sound bad to you? Jazz? Any good suggestions? I think I'm going to buy it for myself in January. A palatino? I've heard that those are best to learn on. Or do you have any better suggestions? Thanks so much for replying to this thread, I was pretty much coming up empty.

I don't know much about brands or what's best to learn on. Why is the Palatino the best to learn on? I say stay away from the country stuff cos for me... and everyone else i know... it sounds REALLY BAD  just too whiny and the 'yeeha' cowboy stuff takes away the beauty of the instrument.
I've played very little jazz but what i have played i loved! I just got the music from my teacher.... sorry... Anyway shouldn't the music store person advise on what's best? By the way, will you be getting a tutor? Cos if you are, get them first and then get them to help you get a violin. That way you're sure to get one that fits right, sounds right and suits you. Have fun! :P
