song lyics discussion thread
perhaps this should be in the music matters section but i was a little unsure. anyway believe it or not a serious thread started by aussiecreeder lol. i don't mind if there are multiple songs being discussed here and move on whenever you feel like it. a song's lyrics i want to discuss is a perfect circle's "judith". now this song normally will offend or at least make christians wince (myself included) although i do know what its about. for those that don't know the song is about maynard's mother dying of cancer and in his opinion the "parasites" who were fundamentalist christians that were around her during her last days.
the opening lines of the song go "you're such an inspiration for the ways that i will never, ever choose to be". what grabbed me was never, ever choose to be. this raises some questions that could be discussed forever. you could go into christian doctrines like pre-destination if you want but even at a much simpler level it has meaning. do people involved in religion have a choice? is it part of their make up? do people growing up in such a household ever develop their own faith? discuss.......

here are the full lyrics below.......
you're such an inspiration for ways that i will never ever choose to be. oh so many ways for me to show you how your savior has abandoned you. Thank(fuck) your god. he did this, took all you had and left you this way. still you pray, never stray, never taste of the fruit. never thought to question why. it's not like you killed someone. it's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side. praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed. he did it all for you. oh so many ways for me to show you how your dogma has abandoned you. pray to your christ, to your god. never taste of the fruit, never stray, never break, never choke on a lie, even though he's the one who did this to you thought to question why it's not like you killed someone. it's not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side. talk to jesus christ as if he knows the reasons why he did this all to you. he did it all for you.

This song always comes up for discussion
![]() That opening line is so cutting to me, as is the whole song. I think a lot of people can relate to it. It makes me think of my upbringing, religion wise and it was very strict and many things happened that made me question it all. I think that's what Maynard is talking about, blind faith...his not understanding how his mother could rely so heavily on her faith while she was being ripped up and down by her supposed Christian friends and dying of a horrible disease. I don't think when he screams that sentence that everyone finds so offensive: F*ck your god, that he's necessarily talking about THE god, but whatever god you serve, be it money, drugs, power. If it is God in the Christian sense, I think the song sort points out his frustration with reconciling what is supposed to be a loving God with one that is so judgmental and seems so cruel. The line: It's not like you killed someone, it's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side" makes me think about the God in the Christian sense. I think he might be saying that the subject hasn't done anything bad enough that would warrant a God punishing her with her suffering.

A problem I have with what Maynard said about on that song on the DVD is he saids Genesis 1:1 and then quotes John 1:1. Now I guess that is an easier enough mistake to make but it makes it looks as If he likes to appear very knowledgable but perhaps isn't as intellectual as he would like to make out. Great song though......

Yes, someone else brought that up on another board, but nevertheless, it doesn't really change how he feels or his perception of the situation or what he wanted to say about it. He might have been tired when he was doing it and just flubbed up the reference. Maybe it was the 49th take of the commentary. Who knows? And he did have the chapter and verse he wanted, I guess. It is a great song, though. It's good for when you're feeling cranky and you need to get out some of that anger.

That is true although he saids "you may as well close the book right there" and I can only assume he meant just after the start. Anyhow he has his point but this could become a religious discussion very quickly lol. It is good for getting the anger out..... ![]()
