View Full Version : Good Movie = The Salton Sea

If you've followed some of the interviews AB has done, you'll note that Mark and/or Myles has mentioned in the past that the song "Burn It Down" was inspired by the movie The Salton Sea, starring Val Kilmer. I just happened to catch this movie on HBO tonight. Wow, what a movie. If you get a chance, watch it on HBO this month, or go to your local video store and rent it. It's from 2002 so it should be in the cheap section under drama or thriller. Once you finish watching it, turn on the song "Burn It Down" :) Awsome song, awsome movie.

As opposed to Stapp getting inspiration frooooommm.....what? Prednisone? Jim Beam? Cannabis? :dunno:

or the uncredited "song doctors" that have assisted him...in any case, Stapp has lots of life FAILURES from which he can draw inspiration (as you can clearly see on his latest opus), so he's clearly leaps and bounds ahead of Mark in THAT category...can't wait to hear his next song of self-imposed persecution about his altercation with 311 or the Casino incident...

Well to be fair, the Casino incident probably wouldn't spawn the typical "woe is my life" stanzas from Scott. That one would probably have a bit more upbeat version of something like "i tried my best to get laid, yet in the end I was played"

But I'm digressing....

I've never heard of that movie Steve. Sound like it might be interesting (from what you described about it on another bb), maybe along the lines of Trainspotting a little bit. Time to go update my Netflix queue.

(1) Hey guys,...I'm new here. Just thought I'd say how much I love AB and "In Loving Memory".....it rocks!!!
(2) (Review of TGD) I would give it a four out of ten. It in no way compares to ODR. Myles Kennedy has such phenominal vocal range....it's awesome live!!!!!!
(3) How can I hear "Ahavo Rabo Taco Salad?".....Love AB and would love to hear something new? For that matter,..is there any other new songs out by AB that weren't on ODR?

Not only has his opinion drastically changed, but the syntax as well. Hmm...something is afoot.

Actually it isn't really like Trainspotting, except for the fact that it's about tweekers. The basic premiss of the movie is a guy's wife is killed by some drug dealers and he evolves into the tweeker lifestyle to try to seek revenge for his wife's murder. Can't say anymore without giving away parts of the story. It's really good though. :) The movie ends with Tantric's song "Mourning" which really fits the ending. "Burn It Down" fits in great in the beginning and right before the end of the movie. :D

Last I looked, Scott was a HUMAN,...therefore being falliable and "born in sin" as we all are,.....even the Pope screws up from day to day. Because Stapp speaks so Highly of his relationship w/ God, then he is not granted any slack, correct?

The good ole "he's only a human and has faults just like everybody else" argument. I don't deny that, hell I've got a ton of problems too that I freely admit to.

No, the fact that Scott speaks highly of his relationship with God is just fine with me. The fact that he expounds constantly in interviews on how he LIVES such a good Christian life, then goes on with his usual (and current) stunts/actions which immediately gainsay the lifestyle he'd just been preaching about is the problem.

Well here's the first thing that came up when I googled stapp interviews.

Christian Music News Interview

"That's what's different this time around, I've stepped back into the arena of faith, of faith in Christ,"

"I'm not just looking at God as a way out of a jam; I've embraced being a Christian as what shapes my values, my worldview, my morals. My commitment to Christ is what establishes my priorities, how I will raise my son, my whole person."

I've yet to dig through the rest of his interviews.

yeah, and what I REALLY love is that his songs are about repentance and redemption, yet never leads a lifestyle that will ever ELEVATE him out of NEEDING it...with his hypocritical lifestyle, he has GUARANTEED that he will ALWAYS have subject fodder for his songs...they will always be a bit REPETITIVE, as he never seems to be learning the lessons he SEEMS to be seeking (much like his fanbase), but he will never be wanting in the gullible folks that buy what he's selling, and, make no mistake, SELLING is all that he's doing...selling his lies and selling his faux introspective lyrics to the gullible masses (well, since his album fell OUT of the top 50, maybe the masses aren't so gullible anymore, LOL)...but I WILL tell you one way that God has TRULY blessed him: Stapp is "blessed" (or "cursed", depending on your naivite and/or perspective) with fans that will always believe his lies, will never feel that their intelligence is being insulted BY his lies, and will always buy his albums...and, as long as we're talking about God, if Stapp feels that he doesn't need to "justify" his actions, he doesn't have to justify it to me, you, his fans, his unfortunate son, or anyone else...but he WILL be held ACCOUNTABLE (you may not be familiar with the difference, but Merriam Webster Online will be able to help you) to God...

I don't so much have a problem with his going back to the well for song fodder, but what does bother me is that unlike other artists who have chronicled their struggles with their spiritual lives or with, say, addiction, on more than a few albums, they come at with a different perspective, a more mature look at their situation, a little more reflection and self-analysis. The lyrics on TGD sound like a fifth-grader's mentality and it seems he has regressed rather than progressed.
