Opera has been around for a really long time. I think it was around back when Netscape was the "in" browser.

Not it has always been free. Previously there were ads displayed in the toolbar. You could pay to remove them if you wanted, but you did not have to pay to use the browser. They removed the ads alltogether a couple weeks ago.

Opera still doesn't render within compliancy and doesn't even touch a gecko based browser such as FireFox.

firefox rocks... and i can still remember a friend of mine using Opera back in our sophomore year of high school, 5 years ago
