I really need your help on something...
Hey everyone,
The unit we are working on in English at the moment, is debating. We are doing our presentations sometime next week, and I really need your help on my group's topic that we are doing. Which is, The Legal Age Of Consent Should Be Lowered. (The legal age of sex.) At the moment here it is 16, i'm not sure about there. Is it the same? But anyway, I need some reaserch. My group is for lowering the legal age, even though myself personaly, i think it should be kept the same, if not higher. But my group is for lowering it. So, if you guys can share your opinions with me about this, what you think would be a good thing about lowering it, like anything that would be good for my debate, that would be awesome, and really really helpful. Thanks very much. :P

Here in the good 'ol U.S of A it's 18 for everything except drinking, which is 21. According to my history professor, if every student under 21 in the USA who wanted to drink and have the legal drinking age lowered, should march into any store that sells alcohol, and walk out with a 6-Pack. That would lower the drinking age. He also said that won't happen because we're too lazy and don't care enough to do anything.

Here in Australia, it's 17. I think it's a sensible age for consent. I don't see it being put above 17, but I also don't think that lowering it is going to do anything. 13 and 14 year olds will have sex if they want, whether it's legal or not.
I suppose an argument in support of lowering the age of consent would be that if it was lowered to, say, 14 or 15, then education about safe sex, etc, would be made available to kids that age. Then, it's possible that, even though there would probably still be the same number of kids doing it, there would be less pregnancies and diseases resulting from that sex. Hope this helps!

16 is quite young enough in my opinion.
The world is rife with overpopulation as it is, although laws on consentual sex won't change that, it certainly sends out a certain type of message that indiscriminate sex is ok if the age limit were to be lowered. In the UK the age at which a person is to be considered officially "adult" is 18. You can buy cigarettes and alcahol at 18, although you can legally have sex at 16, and learn to drive at 17. There's not enough promotion of sex education in british schools. It's better now than it was 10 years ago, although the topic is still considered taboo by alot of people. To think some people as young as 10-12 are experimenting with sexual activity, but the majority of education on the subject only begins at 12 onwards, means that some of these kids are already in hot water before they've recieved any education on the subject. Having said that, what is the point of having a law that forbids this sort of activity when those involved are too young to be prosecuted anyway? Not wanting to sound like an arse, but the amount of unmarried 16 year old mothers with kids in this country is sapping the resources of the welfare state, which then is forced to fork out money to them in order to ensure the child has an adequate upbringing. Sex education should start at age 10 in my opinion, obviously kids of this age need to be educated in a responsible way so as not to promote underage sex. Something needs to done, that's for sure. Exactly what is the best way to go about it I'm not 100% sure, but the age of consent should not be lowered. Gib. |

I think 16 is just right.
Following reasons: a) it's pretty early compared to other countries B) It's not too early (well gotta set some boundiers.. I guess..) c) People will still break that law, so not like it matters lol
