Seeking advice on local band circuit matters

Ok - those of you who have your own bands and do gigs on the local circuit.... I need some advice about the ins outs and trade secrets of managing a band at this level. I am entertaining the possibility of taking on the responsibility of booking and promoting for a friend's band that I think is awesome - I am educated and intelligent and think I have a lot to offer these guys but I know that this is a new thing for me. I could learn alot quickly but there are always hints and tips that might get me headed in the right direction. Anyone willing to help me start at square one and proceed from there? Anyone have suggestions about where to focus my energy in getting these guys some gigs? Anything???? Anyone????

If done a bit of this... the best thing you can do is put together a promo package. It cost a bit of money, but it's worth it in the end. Put in band biography, any demo cd's, promo pictures, contact info(important) ect. and send it to all the local venues in a nice folder. Wait about 2 weeks and start calling them up. Network with other bands and see if you can start opening for them. Let me know how it turns out
