Sea Change

Sea Change

Water is like life…it takes on so many forms…

At times it can be relentlessly rough; As powerful and devastating as a flash flood

Other times we witness it’s perfect calm and translucence;
And just as our faces are reflected in its perfect serenity,
we desire it’s influence to be reflected in us.

Water can change in a moment-suddenly shifting from a calm, blue ocean
to a violent foe; Easily overcoming our confident stance
and sending us tumbling in it’s grip, fighting desperately for fresh air and solid ground;
Not knowing if we will come out of it alive

We are left bruised and battered on the barren seashore-Saturated in defeat;
Feeling so weak. and powerless;
Wondering if we can even simply stand on our own two feet again…

…Suddenly while laying helpless on that seashore, we lift up our heavy head
and our eyes gradually come into focus
on the steady hand of a friend;
Reaching down to help us up on our feet again

As we gingerly reach for them, we notice it’s dry texture; callosity; -And cuts and bruises so very similar to ours.
It becomes so very clear that this friend has experienced
similar crashing waves and rolling sea change,
And they have survived,
Even strengthened through the adversity.

How comforting that hand.
And how comforting to see first-hand,
That though these unpredictable unstable times will come,
They can be endured;

And we can emerge with an experience of deeper places
for ourselves, and for the hand of the next person we behold whose been washed ashore
