I remember, long ago, in a time and place far, far away, when I first heard Alice in Chains. The song, of course, was Man in the Box. I loved that song and knew that band had great potential. Why is it that the great artists die what seems to be before their time? Jim Morrison Janis Joplin Jimmy Hendrix Elvis Presley Jim Croce Kurt Cobaine Michael Hutchence Bob Marley John Lennon I'm sure you can add more. Do these early deaths elevate their aura? Just something to ponder.

On a lighter note...
Lately, I've been listening to something that, at first, rubbed me the wrong way. I'd been so accustomed to a particular sound from this group and, then, their sound changes so much. I'm talking about the Moody Blues. They had such a killer, far-out, progressive sound in their first 10 years. Then, in the 80s, they broke out with some hits. The last 12 years has seen 2 original albums and yearly touring. I grew to like "Keys to the Kingdom" (1990ish). Their latest effort ("Strange Times") brings some strange music for a band that defined strange music back in their time. At first, it seemed too soft and conservative. But, I can honestly say it has grown on me and I'm beginning to really like many of the tracks if not all of them to an extent. Funny how music can grow on you. One should strive to always have patience with music and not make hasty judgements. Same goes with people I imagine.
The Moody Blues; ever listen to them?

Yes, Alice definitely was done before their time, primarily because of Layne Staley's heroin addiction. They had three kick-a** full-length albums and two awesome EPs. They pretty much died after Unplugged and Staley barely hung on for another six years. It's really sad. I think it doesn't so much elevate their aura as much as make us think of what might have been. What would they have accomplished had they played out their days? One other comes, to mind, but I can't remember his name. He was the frontman for Blind Melon. I love the song No Rain. That guy had a unique voice.

Re: On a lighter note...
Wow, was THAT a blast from the past for me. I was really into them in the 70s and early 80s, but I lost track of them after that. I saw them twice in concert back then...Amazing performances. I haven't heard anything past the early 80s from them. I will have to give their new stuff a listen. I have yet to replace my vinyl MB with CDs. I'm slowly working my way toward doing that. I have a lot of vinyl and no turntable at the moment. Maybe I should just get a turntable. Sorry for the double post.
