Job Stress!!!

Just curious how everyone deals with job stress? Today I had a horrific incident with a patient and their family:

I had a 20 yr old gang member who got in a fight and his entire body was tore up, fractured bones, scrapes, contusions etc.. and he was to be discharged today after he underwent 4 hours of surgery 3 days ago. He has NO MEDICAL insurance and of course he is treated like everyone else, that is not my issue, the issue is as follows! I proceeded to go over his discharge instructions and his meds to go home with, he gets "indegent" meds seeing he has no money or job. I filled over $900.00 worth of meds for him, free of cost to him. When it came to his Percocet, the pain narcotic the hospital would not fill it due to it being a narcotic. Well....... he became beligerant with me and threw stuff at me in the room and said I was "gonna get it" if I did not fill the Percocet! Well I am nice until I am pushed, and BOY was I pushed!!! I could feel the redness come on my face and My wicked temper starting to come out!:madder: :madder: He then started to get off the bed and grab something else to throw at me! I slammed the door shut and gave him a verbal lashing like he probably never had in his low life! His mother then proceeded to come in the door and she then started on me, as I smelled the alcholol on her breath, she DEMANDED the Percocet be filled!!! I tried to explain to her about the issues at hand and she called me "A blonde punk ass bitch!!!" I felt this urge to reach across the bed and beat the living shit out of her! But no I called security and had them escorted out! What the hell is wrong with people today? I swear people have no damn respect for others let alone themselves!

I am sure you all have stress in your jobs, so what do you do? Do you take a deep breath, smoke a cigerette, take a walk? The thing is while this was going on I had 6 other patients to take care of! It is amazing to me how some of our society feels the need to be this way all the damn time!

I think that's a fine idea, Jen. Between Genghis and whocares old cat, they'd work over those punks in no time. I am so sorry you had to deal with that. That really sucks.

In my job the customer is always supposed to be right. But I've got a little secret for ya..........they're not. I am supposed to do all I can to promote good customer service, but when I've got someone yelling at one of my employees, I am right there in the customer's face giving it right back to them. And I've had security haul out a ton of unruly nasty customers. Luckily we don't get many, but those who mess with me are on the receiving end of my fine Irish temper.

I wish that I could, Jen. I hate to see anyone being berated, it's just not fair.

Jen sorry to hear you had such a bad day, The bad thing is you will probably see him again and again until he's not so lucky and then you see him for the last time..I've often wondered if I just said hello to someone would I make a difference, or if we all just said hi how are you doing , would it change the world? you never know....The fact is we never will.

I am so sorry to hear about that, Jen. What a crap head of a guy to be that way. He has probably been taught violence his entire life and I am sure it was from his mother, they both sound like jerks. I would bow down to someone who would be so kind as to fill my prescriptions, I hate paying for 70.00 worth of meds at the pharmacy, let alone 900 dollars. Sadly, there are some people in this world who feel everyone owes them something and I hate that those who are willing to tell them how it is, come few and far between, but I hope that they will one day learn not to treat people that way. I am not gonna hold my breath. If I were you, I would do something comfortable and familiar to unwind. I like to handle a stressful day with something that is familiar to me. Like maybe a movie that I used to watch with my Mom, or a movie I really liked when I was younger (before responsibility came about), something that makes you remember a happy thought, even a song would do it. It may only be a quick escape, but it helps you to focus on the important things and not the jerks that we have to come in contact with along the way.

Jen, geez, I don't know how you do it. I don't think I could tolerate having to work with the public anymore. People are just so unbelievably rude sometimes. I'm sorry you had such a rotten time of it...

Regarding your question, I work in a high-stress environment (though not nearly as bad as yours) and people pop off on each other all the time. We have multiple deadlines and my job depends on somebody else doing his job, etc. I really have to bite my tongue on many occasions, though I have failed one or two times. When somebody gets rude with me, I usually let them go on and make complete fools of themselves. I then walk away and when I have cooled off, I find my way to make that person understand how little I appreciated being treated like sh**. It's usually something like: I didn't appreciate you being so rude to me. I don't mind if you have a problem with something I did, but please try to approach it in a more professional manner. I also listen to music while I'm working, which cuts down on my stress level.
When I get home, I typically blast some really loud music in my ears .
