trying to sort bands in 'appropriae' genres is a hopeless and dumb idea.
there are good bands, and there are bad band that's the only divider there is

i hate most punk... nothing but a bunch of whiny 20 year olds pandering to pre-pubescent teens who hate their parents and want to leave town... i'll admit i have a few punk cd's (Good Charlotte, Ataris, Blink, 1 of each) but i rarely listen to them, so it's all good Matt.

Saying a band is good or not is determined by a person's opinion. So you're point is baseless.

zing! i must agree, it's easier to group artists by the style of music which they play (or, if applicable, the multiple genres into which they fall) than by whether you consider them to be good or bad

Saying if band is "hard rock" or "nu metal" or "punk metal" also is determined by persons oppinions.

No it is not. That must be the dumbest thing I have heard. Opinion is if you think a certain genre is good or not, "hard rock, "nu-metal" or "punk metal". Something is put in a genre according to its sound or even its image. It's the technicality of the music. Like grunge genre for example. It's a mix of metal and punk. Nirvana is considered grunge because they sound like a mix of metal and punk with the dirty guitar tone. They weren't called grunge because it was someone's opinion. It'd be an opinion if you said Nirvana sucked. Another thing that annoys me is those people that obsess and say everything is an opinion, even though it is not (Lechium).

Trees, dude you're so oblivious...
So you guys defined Linking Park to be Nu Metal, right? Well according to AllMusic.com they are Alternative Metal, Post-Grunge, United States of America. My friend qualifies them as Rap Metal. Also some people qualify Tool as Nu Metal, while most people agree that Tool and LP are not in the same genre... see? Tonns of sub-genras of 'rock' and noone can agree which band belong where.

That still isn't opinion. A lot of it is ignorance.

Fellas.... give it a rest, eh? it's not ignorance... that's usually reserved for issues of greater importance than musical genres... I see where you're coming from Lech, up to people determining an artist's genre themselves (LP's newer stuff is more rock oriented than rap, so I don't consider them rap-metal anymore... when I think rap-metal, I think Papa Roach and 3rd Strike)... But there are standards for what musical elements constitute a certain genre... so if I were to say Enya is Southern Rap? after all, that could be my opinion. but it'd be way off base for me to say that, as well as it's off base for someone to agree that I'd be entitled to that opinion, seeing as how it's an entirely inaccurate depiction of the style of music which Enya produces... thus, genres have standards for music (i.e. lyrics, instruments, and the like) by which most people tend to adhere... but yes, there are many genres that are close and even overlap, as well as there are many bands who tweak their styles slightly as their careers progress.
