vBulletin....

Ok, I'll be flat out honest with you, I'm having problems with a bulletin board on my website (tremonti.net) .. I tried Iknboard .. didn't work .. tried pHpBB .. complicated stuff .. so i downloaded vBulletin 2.66 from KaZaa and uploaded all the files and folders from the 'upload' folder to the website in a folder called 'forums'
now the problem is that the version i downloaded, it doesn't have a manual or a help topic or a how-to-go-about-after-uploading-files page ... so i'm stuck .. I don't eeven know waht URL I have to type in to go to the Installation! LOL.
Anyways, I see that this board is run on vBulletin .. so could anyone help me on how to upload files??
oh an sorry about this being in the wrong forum and stuff .. I just figured that more people would visit this forum .. soz

Just to let you know puj,

vBulletin is VERY strict about illegal installations of their software. They have lots of people who make it their mission to find vBulletin installations that weren't paid for. Just a warning before you move ahead and waste your time.

Secondly, Ikonboard and phpBB are easy to install. Just upload the files according to the installation instructions and run the install script. Everything gets setup for you.

You can try Invision Board too... http://www.invisionboard.com/

steve, I know nothing about PHP. can I edit it with Dreamweaver? or is there another software?

what I got (not so sure) is that php generates html....is that correct? like when you click to show font code on your site it appears <html> </html> ???

:embarass: :embarass:

PHP is a scripting language. It doesn't generate HTML. So, for example, on my Creedfeed site, in PHP I tell it to echo out HTML code to create the web page.

Code:
echo "<font size=4>Hello World</font>";

This code will display Hello World in font size 4 to the web browser.

Anyways, yes you can use Dreamweaver to edit PHP code. You can also use Windows Notepad if you wanted. You have to know how to code PHP if you want to edit it though.

hey thanks a lot Steve!
I'm checking out Invision Power Board right now .. just clicked on the restricted license ..
the problems i'm having with Ikonboard are .. well, let's just say I don't know the difference between uploading files in ASCII mode and some other mode which i think is the root of my problems .. coz it just won't register the filenames .. either says that i'm not authorized to view the page or says there was a CGI fatal error...
and with PHPbb, I upload the files and the installation page props up .. ienter all teh details but then it says there's something wrong with teh pHp configuration of hte site ... and i know that PHP is configured for my URL coz i payed extra for that! and i uploaded some php test file which checks if php is installed or not and it said it was .. so I'm not sure how to proceed with those two .. gonna check out Invision power board as soon as it downloads... thanks a lot ..
one final question: Is the database username and password different to the ftp username and password? maybe that's what's wrong with the pHpBB thing ..

Yes, you have a separate MySQL username and password. Also, if the phpBB thing said there is a problem with the PHP installation, then there's probably something wrong with the PHP installation Most likely PHP wasn't configured properly OR it wasn't configured with the required options phpBB requires. I'd recommend contacting your web host and ask them. Let them know you want to install phpBB and you are receiving the following error (list them here).

BTW, who is your web host?

thanks again ..
I already did tell the guy about the error message a few days back .. I gave him the exact message .. he said he'd look into it and tell me the version of php run on the site on thursday (there's a huge festival going on here which meas that all offices are closed till thursday)
as for my webhoster, you prolly don't know who they are ...
American Systems for Dubai, UAE ... yep .. that's where i live .. and they have outragously high prices but they can afford to, as they're the only hosters in the damn country ..

You can get the PHP version by making a file called phpinfo.php and add this to the file:

Code:
<? phpinfo(); ?>

Then upload it and open it in your browser. It should say what version you are running on the top.
