the interesting thing is, if you look at the bid history, the person bid the initial $8.95, then upped it to $80.00 without anyone appearing to have challenged him (or her). the eventual winner then grabbed it for $81.

When you bid on an item in eBay you can set an initial bid and a maximum bid. The person probably set $8.95 as initial bid and their maximum bid as $80. The person who actually won must have set their maximum bid higher than $80 and it just incremented up above the first person's maximum bid.
