My Tattoo Is Peeling

almost half the scabbing has fallen off

it seems a little faded, but i guess that's to be expected after it initially peels off

yeah, you will be glad once all the healing is done. it's much easier without all of that extra upkeep.

Scabbing? It shouldn't be scabbing at all Dan. Are you keeping ointment on it? A bit of pealing, like the dead skin coming off is normal, but you shouldn't be scabbing. That WILL take out the color.

well let's see: the original ointment i used "Tattoo Goo" caused my tattoo to puss fluid, so i decided i would use "Betadine", the stores didn't have Betadine, i heard Vaseline drains color, i heard Neosporan can leave spots, i heard Bactricin (or something) can cause problems, so i deicided to use the lotion Eucerin, and i have been washing it 4 times a day and apply lotion afterwards

oh well, we'll see

From my experience with tattoes, diff. artists give slightly diff. instructions for taking care of a new tat. The one me and the hubby go to told us this:

To wash it softly with soap and water after the bandage comes off initially and let it dry out that day.

For three days after, put a THIN layer of A & D ointment on twice a day. When washing it, just pat it dry.

After 3 days, use Lubriderm once or twice a day if needed until tat is completely healed.

This has worked great for our tats.

Oh, and he also told us, not to wash it that often and to let it breath sometimes so it gets a chance to dry out and heal. If its kept too moist all day long, it will scab and not heal as great.

Well Dan I used cetaphil and aveeno lotions with mine. These lotions are designed to help keep moisture in the skin for those that have sensitive skin. I have three tats and they all did just fine with these lotions. The only problem I had was with the one on my back. It looked and felt as if someone had dragged me along a blacktop road on my back. If the scab is a thin layered scab and not a really thick, painful scab your tat should be fine.

There is a difference Dan. A scab is, well you know. The dead skin pealing away will not be dried blood, it will be like if your skin rolls gently off and has color from the tat in it. A&D though. If you have problems at night with it drying out, wrap saran wrap around it with a slight coat of ointment under it. It has to stay slightly moist till the possibility of scabbing is gone.

Everyone is going to tell you different things. Did your artist tell you it was ok to scab? If not, call him and ask what to use if you are allergic to what he gave you. My friend had a reaction to the ointment and ended up at the ER. Good luck.

yeah it's not painful and it looks like paper when it comes off

this is from my Tattoo Goo aftercare sheet

"After 5 to 14 days, the tattoo may start to peel (this is normal like a sunburn) and scab. DO NOT pick or peel the skin away, let it fall off naturally during the washing and application of Tattoo Goo. Fresh skin will soon replace the dead skin. Colors may fade during the process, but will return when healing is complete."

"After a few weeks all scabbing will be gone but the area may still be sensitive. Continue regular cleaning and application of Tattoo Goo for proper aftercare of your tattoo."

well it's only been about a week since i got it and most of the scabbing has fallen off, so i should be okay.
