Mistress of Midnight

The busy signal keeps ringing in his ear
He knows she won’t answer, but he dials incessantly
Pushing the buttons until his fingers go numb
He swallows hard, the rage bubbling up to choke him

In the dream they rule the skies hand in hand
Dipping the bread, sipping the wine
They ride the wind and kiss the clouds
Higher and higher they soar on the wings of Icarus

He awakens just before the plunge
Shivering and bathed in sweat, unable to focus
In a daze he fumbles for her golden locks
But all he grabs is dead air

It’s me or her, she demands
The angel in white or the mistress of midnight
He takes longer than he should to choose
Now it’s too late as she wriggles out of his grasp

Here’s to us, he mumbles as he raises the glass
He guzzles desperately to fill the hole rotting what’s left of his senses
Sufficiently numb, he drifts into the void
As her ultimatum pounds his brain
