Wherever your history is, please feel free to keep it there. No need to argue on every board on the 'net.

If you know whats good for ya you'll choose PJ!
There are bands that came out around the same time I prefer ahead of Nirvana like Tool and Radiohead.

Ability and willingness to evolve and change direction. Each person in the band is right up there at the best in the world at what they do. More than simply a rock band writing good songs, but out there "fighting the good fight". Vedder one of the best lyrcrists in the game. Survived well beyond the "grunge" era (something the others here failed to do basically) and still making good albums and putting on a great live show.

The only one that is even close to being the "best in the world" is Vedder. IMO. But yeah you do have a point with the grunge area thing. |

Listen to their song Garden you will never look back. Pretty much what Michael said, and I find Vedders approach to song writing quite different to any other artist that I listen to. The way he can tell a story with such heart felt meaning is really brilliant. And that guitaring, woo baby.

Kim Thayil is good but Mike McCready makes him look an amateur. One can look beyond Pearl Jam and what he did with Mad Season (a group featuring Layne Staley amongst others). There is an instrumental on that album called "November Hotel" where he goes off something shocking.
Matt Cameron has being in both groups although I think Soundgarden allowed him to show off his wares better. Another factor is that although Cornell in his prime was a vocal god, he is now a shadow of his former shelf whilst Vedder arguably is a better vocalist now...at least no worse than 92.
