Colin, I agree with Amy & Jen 100%. Your true friends will be there through the good and the bad. Those who are just there for you when times are going well are good acquaintences, but the real friends are those that help you through the bad times. It sounds like you were trying to be a good friend to that person and he apparently felt otherwise. Cut your losses and move on (easy for me to say) and try try again.
