the d your looking for is lower than the E, on an actual scale you are right, but with how the strings tune when you turn the knobs, it's not note by note, it skips as you turn it more and more, in this case, if you turn it towards you for usually one full turn it'll be D.

If it's right, it should sound an octave lower than your D string
