Golden Jesus

Golden Jesus (12/5/05)

How is it that the line blurs so insidiously?
Once so defined, now eroded by the rising tide of apathy
When did they cross?
How did they not feel the bridge collapse beneath
The weight of their crushing will to desire, aspire and acquire?

They gather like lemmings in the black flatlands
For their annual pilgrimage, giddily lining up
To pay homage to the golden jesus
Paying dearly with what’s left of their tattered dignity
And for what? The thrill of the hunt?
The rush of the kill?

For the love of Christ
Would somebody please burn down the house of plastic cards?
Strip it of its animal magnetism
Rebuild it with a foundation of warm hearts and helping hands
So sorely lacking in this ocean of incivility

Long ago, in a moment of clarity realized
Through the haze of a blood-red stupor
The cord was cut with a dull blade
But cut nonetheless
Begging the question, can we go back?

Precious few seem able to make that return trip
To ignore the clamor of the voices of unreason
Drowning out the little angels
Telling them to shield their eyes
From the glare of the golden jesus
