Question about U2's "Miracle Drug"
 

At 3:02 into the song, right after the guitar solo, there are four lines of lyric sung. The "of science and of medicine" part.

The question is: is that the Edge singing those lines? I heard it rumoured somewhere that it was, and it doesn't really sound like Bono.

I'm pretty sure its Bono. Did U try a community at a U2 site or something? They would know everything lol

I never took too much notice, but now that I listen to it over, it does sound like Edge. Obviously not his high pitched harmony tune but his beautiful low voice, I don't know it could be him, and it might not.

Does anyone know what this song is about? If you don't, when you read the meaning, it takes on a whole new note, when I read about it I blasted the song and I was moved to tears, it's so sad.

no never sat down and read the lyrics but its one of my fav songs on the album. the thing about u2 for me is that neither the edge or bono technically are superior to those in other high class bands but the melodies are so great and the songs very well written. have to respect a guy like bono for what he does in the political arena. much easier to be a trendy lefty then to actually get stuff done like he does and have a guy like bush willing to listen to you.

I think it sounds pretty much like Bono, although Edge IS a good singer!

Yes, Hayley, Miracle Drug is one of those U2 tunes that, in a few years, will be considered a classic, right there with "Where the Streets..." and "One". The story behind the song is amazing.

But, seriously, I think it IS the Edge there...

I don't know how well Miracle Drug is going to do, if people don't know the meaning to the song then it's really nothing, it can be shallow.

And yeah I keep on listening to it but still can't make up my mind, grr that's annoying lol

Miracle Drug right up there with One or Where the Streets Have No Name? ummmm good song but those songs are classics and for good reason. I saw Matchbox 20 cover where the streets....and it was alright but it lacked the passion...sums up that band basically.

the problem with matchbox is that nearly their whole fanbase are casual fans and teenage girls at that. the band has a wicked audience for their hits and in between that everyone sits down. anyhow back to U2 i really should get around to getting their other albums but i really don't like pulling my bankcard out of my wallet! :laugh:

The song is about a man named Christopher Nolan, who was paraplegic. Bono, Larry, Adam, and Edge knew him very closley at school, and his story is so beautiful, yet so sad:

He had been deprived of oxygen for two hours when he was born, so he was paraplegic. But his mother believed he could understand what was going on and used to teach him at home. Eventually, they discovered a drug that allowed him to one muscle in his neck. So they attached this unicorn device to his forehead and he learned to type. And out of him came all these poems that he'd been storing up in his head. Then he put out a collection called Dam-Burst of Dreams, which won a load of awards and he went off to university and became a genius. All because of a mother's love and a medical breakthrough."


So Christopher had lived his whole life trapped inside his own body, not being able to speak, show emotion. This song is so beautiful, the faith a mother can have in her child is amazing. And to think that all of his life, he had memorised these poems, inside his head, not on paper like we would be able to, but stored away inside his head, not being able to speak the words. It's so beautiful to think that a simple drug could become a miracle in someones life. Miracle Drug. :)

So freaky cos this dude has been coming to our church and he is sorta the same. He can walk and stuff but he cant really speak. He has a sort of general sign language going on though, and he is so sensitive to the people around him. It was just amazing cos he usually is very shy and the first time he came to the service, he was smiling at people, making sounds and everything. Even clapping during the services. And U can tell that he is sensitive to God. It is just awe-inspiring. Heaps of us were crying when they brought him up onstage to introduce him. I find him really fascinating and fun and I am proud of his mother for believing in him and for the carers bringing him.

On a personal note, I just love the verse, "the songs are in your eyes" cos I had heaps bad depression over losing my singing voice for around a year (I am a singer) I felt so dead about it all, and when I heard the lyrics the first time it was like God used it to speak it into my spirit, 'theres still something there'. I was bawling! LOL still do! OOPs!!! This aint the religion thread!!!!

wow I had no idea about all of that! That adds a lot more to the song, I guess his disablity gave his other abilities like increased memory.

Wow, that's awesome! :hugs: When I first heard Miracle Drug the interpretation to me was Bono talking about Aids, how passionate he is about those who have the disease, I thought it was about that, but when I read up about it, I felt so differnetly, the song is absolutley beautiful.
