if you use AOL just click "setup" its on your AOL buddy list.

if yer on AIM and the person is on your buddy list, right click and choose block. if its a random IM, then when you get the knock-knock from all the options choose BLOCK. If you want to go into more specific details then go into your Preferences settings.
