My opinion on why Creed was so hated
I posted this on another forum as to why I think Creed got alot of crap, and I'll copy it here. Tell me what you think:

Re: My opinion on why Creed was so hated
Creed isn't a Chad Kroeger clone because they came out before Nickelback. If anything, bands like Lifehouse, The Calling, Default, Nickelback, etc. are varying degrees of Creed clones.

I know that, I was just trying to point out stereotypes and misconceptions that people have about post-grunge. Nickelback and Creed are actually quite different in my mind, with Creed being far more serious than Nickelback. Except possibly for the song How You Remind Me, Nickelback's sound does not remind me of Creed, being far slicker and faster. Default and Theory Of A Deadman are Nickelback clones (I actually couldn't finishing listening to Theory's second album since it was such a Nickelback knock-off). The Calling I think takes alot from Creed. Lifehouse, I'm not too sure about. What I was doing was pointing out how people tend to lump post-grunge bands, and how Creed stand out from the rest, but people don't judge it that way. |

i dont understand why people hated creed.. they rock out.. they have positive messages..they are excellent musicians .. bands like lifehouse... nickelback.. alice in chains... days of the new.... staind.. and so on are all on the same level of rock as creed.. with their own sound and messages... i dont get why people hate on creed so much.. jealousy probably..

My thoughts.
1. Actually, both MOP & Weathered are 6x platinum in the US. I think it's perfectly fine to dislike a band b/c you hear it too much. It's like, if you've got a girlfriend, but she's always around, or always calling, always texting, always IMing you. You just want to hang out with your buddies for a bit, or have some time to yourself, but you can't. I think it'd be okay to break up with her, no? 2. I couldn't agree more. Pretty much any reference I hear to Creed sucking is people who were annoyed by or just flat out hated Stapp. I think the fact that he pretty much contradicted himself only fueled that fire even more. 3. I'm not so sure about Christianity having a negative effect. Bands like P.O.D. and Switchfoot, although more overtly Christian than Creed, don't receive negative press like Creed did/does, and do generally seem well-respected among the "secular" music community. Furthermore, I've a few friends who are nowhere close to being "Christian," and have commented on how surprisingly good some Christian bands are (Anberlin, Blindside, etc.). I imagine there's no shortage of non-Christians (or non-practicing Christians, whatever that might mean) on here who appreciate P.O.D., Switchfoot, Underoath, Demon Hunter, 12 Stones, Blindside, etc., etc., etc. 4. I agree about the post-grunge sentiment. It was kinda cool back when MOP came out. It peaked, I think, between '99 (HC's release) & '01 or '02, but the market became inundated with copy-cat (second-wave) bands. The Calling, Default, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Puddle of Mudd... most are generally looked down upon by critics, even if they're decent bands in their own right (well, not Nickelback or Puddle of Mudd lol). For a humorous parody, check this out. |

I actually think Nickelback formed and started making music before or at the same time as Creed. And their a good band as well. And I also believed Creed deserved every bit of success they had. They had powerful, guitar driven songs that had an uplifting message. That's why they were so great and millions of people bought the albums. They're still in my top five favorite bands, probably at number 2 right now. I agree 100% with Scorpion King. |
Re: My opinion on why Creed was so hated
Both formed in '95. Nickelback's first major-label release was in early '00. It was a re-release of an album they had release the previous year on a Canadian indie label. So, it is possible that Nickelback was picked up by Roadrunner because popular rock music at the time leaned towards the post-grunge/alt-metal sound.

Re: My opinion on why Creed was so hated
Like someone else said, Nickelback has been around for a long time -- just wasnt heard of. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpbE7tFtxyU There is an actual song from one of their pre-Silver Side Up CD, and here is all the info u need: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickelback.
Also, why is it when some band/writer/whatever comes out like a similar style as another band that ppl cry "they suck"? I like bands with a male, rough voice like Nickelback/Puddle of mud/Defualt.....and in Nickelback's case, I like Chad voice better the Scott -- its deeper and more to what I like. Anyway, I think all the bands above -- Creed/nickelback/Default/POM are all good bands, with the last two being the worst.... |
