Agent D 12-03-2003 06:51 PM

Could one of the guitar experts around here explain to me how to tune to drop d?

Marty 12-03-2003 06:56 PM

Drop D is just tuning your low (the thickest) E string down 1 step. Take the knob and turn it until when you fret a note on the 7th fret (that sounds like) the A string. To check it, play the intro of My Own Prison (if you know it) Thats how I always check Drop-D tuning. Eventually you'll be able to do it by ear. I hope that helps.

Thanks ;)

Bridge of Clay 12-03-2003 07:50 PM

the problem is turning it to Open D (Open D5)

Agent D asked for Drop D, not Open D or Open D5, dont confuse him/her. ;)

facelessman 12-04-2003 12:26 PM

meh
hey marty, who is that on your avatar?

Rune 12-04-2003 04:24 PM

i just drop it until it sounds an octave lower than the d string

only problem i have with open d5 is busting the g string

Wylde-Tremonti 12-04-2003 09:44 PM

Tuning to your other D string is WAY EASIER....use that....

facelessman 12-04-2003 10:05 PM

i agree....much easier

It is, from Once Upon a Time In Mexico.

Agent D 12-05-2003 01:02 PM

So I increase the tension in the Low E string until it sounds like the D string played at the 7th fret? :wtf:

Rune 12-05-2003 03:21 PM

no, you decrease the tension, turn the knob towards you (if it's strung right)

D is below E, so you want to lower the pitch until it sounds an octave lower than the d string (or the A string if you fret 7)

Agent D 12-05-2003 05:26 PM

Okay, thanks, Rune. ;)

Um...eh...sorry, but what is open D? Does the G have to go up? Sorry...

Marty 12-25-2003 11:21 PM

Open D Tuning is DADF#AD.
D -> Tuned down (from E to D)
A
D
F# -> Tuned down (from G to F#)
A ->Tuned Down (from b to A)
D - Tuned Down (from e to D)

Sincirr 12-25-2003 11:32 PM

Ok, so the gauge of the G string is the problem is it.
I tune open on my friends 4 year old's guitar, so at least he is strummin a distinguishable chord, lol

Wylde-Tremonti 12-26-2003 01:05 AM

oh...guess not...nm...lol

Sincirr 12-26-2003 06:57 AM

I havent attempted much creed, but any of the Creed stuff I have, it seems to have been in drop D, so I'm yet to tackle any of the other tunings.

He plays with Open D on Stand Here With Me. Only on Faceless Man, My Sacrifice, and Weathered does he use Open D5 tuning.
Try to check your facts before you post them, especially for those who get confused easily. ;)

Wylde-Tremonti 12-26-2003 12:47 PM

well... sorry.... FOR THE MOST PART.... mark uses an alternate Open D5 instead of Drop D... there are a Few Other tunings he uses...

You Happy?
