Define 'best'.

Best at playing music so complicated it borders on the insane?
Best at pulling out an accoustic and strumming a catchy tune that makes people want to sing along?
Best at putting together a song with huge riffs that make you want to rock out?
Best at building a song towards a mind numbing crescendo?

You're pretty vague there, AmberSunset.

Xterminator27 09-25-2004 02:32 AM

why does there have to be a "best" why cant we just injoy what each guitarist has to offer without having to compare them?

luvscott4ever 09-28-2004 03:25 PM

I think it's WAY to hard to pick "THE BEST"...there are SOOO many incredible guitarists'!! But yes, SRV is "ONE" of the best....You could add, Adam Jones, Billy Howerdel, Eric Clapton, Kirk Hammett, Eddie Van Halen, Mark Tremonti, and ohhh sooo many more!! It's too hard to think!! ;)

RMadd 09-28-2004 06:01 PM

no offense, but i'm not gonna list tremonti w/ those other guys. he might be really good, but he's not great yet, definitely not on par w/ Clapton and Eddie and most of those other guys.

DekWannaBFlea 10-02-2004 06:08 AM

Jimi Hendrix - Jimi Hendrix Experience
Jeff Beck - Yardbirds, Jeff Beck Group, Solo
Eric Clapton - Yardbirds, Cream, Derek & The Dominos, Solo
Jimmy Page - Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, The Firm
Eddie Van Halen - Van Halen
Joe Satriani - Solo
John Petrucci - Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment
Duane Allman - Allman Brothers Band, Derek & Dominos

Are All better, but he is better dam good

(P.S. Tremonti is good but he ain't nearly as good alot of the best)

RMadd 10-02-2004 01:04 PM

ahhh, i can't believe i forgot about Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton

benkenobi 10-07-2004 07:31 AM

What's his best album or which one should I pick up first?

bgivens33 10-11-2004 11:25 PM

no.... it's hendrix.

Bridge of Clay 10-11-2004 11:43 PM

ok, who said Slash???

that's just not right! sure, Slash is good, but he's not on the same league as SRV, Clapton and Satriani.

AndrewFromABRox 10-20-2004 09:31 PM

hes' my favorite but THERE IS NO best, goh people argue about it all the time and no one can get it through their thin little head that there is no way to measure best, everyone ha sa preference, goh stop these things.

lol, not quite sure why i threw him in there... Joe Satriani's fucking amazing!
my faves: him, John Petrucci (Dream Theater), Angus Young (AC/DC), Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen,

SRV is without a doubt one of the best. It has to be admitted even if you aren't a fan. Of course, "the best" is subjective. It is all about preference. My personal favorite is Eric Clapton. He's absolutely AMAZING!! To me he is without a doubt the best, and on my personal fave list he's followed very, very closely by Bruce Springsteen and Pete Townshend. Later on comes Tony Iommi, Jonny Lang, Angus Young, and others.

SRV makes my top 10 personal fave list, and I would say he is on the list of top 10 of all time. He really is great.

bgivens33 11-05-2004 02:36 PM

ok, there probably isn't a right answer to this question... but I can tell you there are some wrong ones.

it is NOT mark tremonti.

he would be the first to admit it.

another one that hasn't been mentioned yet(i don't think) is david gilmour. he probably isn't the best technical guitarist ever, but man could he make that thing sing.

shiver 11-09-2004 12:01 AM

Not a fan of SRV, but the dude was freakin' amazing. I guess the reason I am not a big fan is because I have only heard a few of his own original recordings, and everything else has been a note for note cover of a Hendrix song. I may be biased though because I am a huge fan of Hendrix and what he did for music. Putting together a list of greats is tough though, because there are so many people that have played the guitar and are really good, but nobody, or very few people, have heard of them. That and whats good to me isn't good to you, so...
