What is your favorite popular "Grunge" band?

Well we have Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam and Nirvana? So do you think?

aussiecreeder 02-07-2005 02:10 AM

I would order them like this....

Pearl Jam
AIC
Soundgarden
STP
Nirvana

DekWannaBFlea 02-07-2005 02:20 AM

Well I voted for Soundgarden, Here is why:

Vocals: Chris Cornell sings like an angel one minute, and like a madman in the next, his highs and lows give me sivers when I hear them, he clearly out powers and has a better range than any of the other "Grunge" vocalists. IF you want "proof" listen to "Slaves and bulldozers" from Badmotorfinger.

Guitar: Tyail is simply a badass, no one can touch him coming from this poll, Black hole sun solo is an amazing piece of music. His unique blend of punk, hard rock and psychedelia is masterful, and ver unqiue compared to the other bands.

Those are two big reasons but if i need to go further i will. I have all of Nirvana's cds, decant but pretty weak compared to the other grunge bands. AIC, I have Dirt and greatest hits, i really don't like the lead singers voice that much, but other than that pretty good. STP, i have all of their albums, the only weakness is the some songs sound the same as some others. Pearly Jam, I have Ten, nothing too unique to me about them except Vedder's voice. So if i had to rate them:

Soundgarden
Stone Temple Pilots
AIC
Nirvana
Pearl Jam

DekWannaBFlea 02-07-2005 02:21 AM

Somebody voted without replying.....Grr, and for Pearl Jam, ugh. lol

fluttergirl 02-07-2005 02:30 AM

do i even need to tell you what i voted for?

No lol. But you can tell me why if you want....i guess.

Muad'Dib 02-07-2005 05:44 AM

Stone Temple Pilots easily.

Anna1011 02-07-2005 07:45 AM

hmmm.. will get back to ya on that one.

RMadd 02-07-2005 11:34 AM

this was a tricky one, indeed. i only voted b/c i felt obliged to go so. not a huge fan of grunge music. sure, i own a few pearl jam cd's, but i never listen to 'em. i've got music from all those bands, and i'd say i prolly listen to Soundgarden the most, so that's why they got my vote. now, i would've voted for PJ if we were talking only about their first couple albums. Ten's great. But it's all downhill from there, IMO. Nirvana? Hugely overrated.

Torn Daredevil 02-07-2005 12:07 PM

Dammit! I can't decide between STP and Soundgarden. Two of my favorite bands.

I guess I'll vote eventually. I can't vote right now, grrrrrrrrrrrr

Torn Daredevil 02-07-2005 12:09 PM

The only group on that list that I actively dislike is Pearl Jam. I do like a lot of AIC and Nirvana.

Steve 02-07-2005 04:13 PM

My order would be:

Soundgarden
AIC
STP
Pearl Jam
Nirvana

RMadd 02-07-2005 04:30 PM

I like STP a fair amt too. don't listen to much AIC. but i'm glad to see no one's chosen Nirvana thus far

scrit 02-07-2005 06:13 PM

I like all those bands, hard to choose. I'm gonna have to go with Pearl Jam right now just because I'm in the mood to listen to their stuff at the moment.

Higher_Desire 02-07-2005 07:12 PM

NIRVANA ALL THE WAY!

I won't bother writing again about why I love Nirvana, but I'll sum it up by saying... it's because I knew Kurt.

No. I knew him sort of. It wasn't a deep friendship or anything, but I knew his name and he knew mine. He was basically a druggie-freak of the area, but he knew a lot of people. Getting passed around from house to house like he did really put him in a lot of places. I mean, afterall, keep in mind that he died when I was about 10. I was just a young tike when he was in Aberdeen and Montesano. He and his loser-druggie friends would often hang out at the field out by the elementary school I went to.

I know his family. (get the difference? knew and know?) they're nice people. (His mom is a little loopy in her old age, though.) I actually see them and know stuff about them. Through them is how I learned a lot about Kurt in my later years when I knew who he was and that he became something.

RMadd 02-08-2005 12:44 AM

ah, well, that's pretty cool

jango 02-08-2005 03:38 PM

Pearl Jam. End of debate.

Good job explaining why you think they are the best, and saying your opinion is the best and doesn't deserve debate is kind of arrogant.

Torn Daredevil 02-08-2005 05:12 PM

After a day of debating myself (not really, LOL), I went with Soundgarden.

Two words: Chris Cornell

Alter Shredder 02-08-2005 06:03 PM

i really cant answer this one right now...

I wouldn't classify STP as grunge, dumbass. Where's Green River? Mudhoney? Mother Love Bone? Candlebox? Melvins? Mad Season?

STP not grunge? hmmm.... well, if Candlebox had been on the list, I'd definitely had voted for them!

Hence the word "Popular", dumbass. O wait, I forgot you can't read.

If you can read maybe you should read this, this shows that STP is Grunge.

well, still, try to be the bigger person. i know i don't want steve locking this thread, b/c it's a good one.
as far as some of the bands not being listed, I'd say Candlebox is fairly popular. i still hear 'em on the alt-rock station here ("Far Behind") every now and then, despite the fact that the album was released a good 10 or 12 years ago.

Dogstar 02-09-2005 06:08 PM

AIC.

HigherGirl 02-09-2005 06:37 PM

They're all awesome, but I would pick:
1 Pearl Jam (for Evenflow and Given to Fly) alone!!!!
2 Alice In Chains (Again is their best song!!!)
3 Nirvana (Smells Like Teen Spirit takes me back to my clubhopping days!!)
4 STP (Big Empty...Anything on The Crow soundtrack ROCKS!!!)
6 Soundgarden ( Blow up the Outside World is GREAT!!!)

aussiecreeder 02-09-2005 07:45 PM

Jango does have a point however, grunge music is more of a dirty punk influenced sound and so a band like Green River would be grunge. Saying that Mother Love Bone (both bands pre-cursors to Pearl Jam) wouldn't be because that was glam basically. Radiohead came out around that time but apart from Creep nothing that they've done is very grungy or like the other bands listed. The most popular early 90's bands are listed and I'll detail why my list is the way it is.

PJ- For me this band has obviously outlasted the rest but also I think they're the most talented. Every member of the band is easily amongst the best at what they do and all members are good songwriters. There are a few Ten fans here but all of their stuff is worth getting your hands on. Eddie gets all the limelight but most people forget that Mike McCready is the best lead guitarist out of all these bands.

AIC-Probably the best harmonsing that rock has ever seen with Layne and Jerry simply awesome. Jerry is a fantatic songwriter and then Layne goes off and creates magic with Mad Season. Good at either hard rock (We Die Young) or softer acoustic stuff on Jar of Flies. Awesome.....

Soundgarden- Cornell at least at his peak is the best rock vocalist seen for a couple of decades and he started as a drummer. Matt Cameron is a machine and Ben Shephard and Kim Thayil are more than handy.

STP-Copped it at PJ rip-offs but that is plainly a lie. They started out making "cock-rock" but developed into more Revolver style Beatles stuff that was very trippy and inventive. The Deleo brothers need to get something else going now that STP is dead and buried seemingly forever.

Nirvana-Overated but Kurt was a very good songwriter and Dave Grohl has done a fantastic job graduating from drummer of the highest order to funny and talented frontman of the foos.

DekWannaBFlea 02-09-2005 09:02 PM

I am sorry if the poll doesn't fit the bands that you want. I picked these bands because they were the most popular of the era, hence the word popular.

Are you done with the poetry? I think Tool is a little to advanced for you.

Any way back on topic, I would like to know (for those who voted for) why you believe Pearl Jam is the best out of this group?

DangerousDan85 02-10-2005 02:14 AM

my ranking is

- STP: (favorite songs: Trippin on a Hole..., Big Empty, Wicked Garden, Lady Picture Show, Interstate Love Song (among many) )

- Alice in Chains: (favorite songs: Would?, I Stay Away, Man in the Box)

- Pearl Jam: ( favorite songs: Black, Given to Fly)

- Nirvana: (favorite songs: (insert song here) )
