I never trust what an artist says about his stuff, I don't think they always understand it themselves, Hetfield said going back to his old stuff, now he sees stuff in it he didn't when he wrote it, the gut knows better than the head, or sooner...

To me the feeling in that song is too big to be just about one person, but I guess when you are young, it is all about one person, one person is like the whole world to you.

I think it is the duty of the Artist to communicate what he sees and feels...and the duty of the audience to interpret it, and each person has permission to put his on "spin" on it, to digest it, as he needs, so there are lots of ways to think about it...most of the time an artist will not tell "what it means" except the most off-hand remark...I remember Paul McCartney said Yesterday was inspired by scrambled eggs, lolol...and I couldn't see the meaning in that song for anything when I was young...but man can I cry over it now, you can't put real life on "rewind"...

This is an awesome thread. shunammite, I have to agree with creedsister, you do have some great insights. I loved reading all the different lyrics you and others have posted. The words were insightful and beautiful.

As far as, ~To Whom it May Concern~, I thought it was written for the fans too. But like we have all said at one time or another, the songs may mean all different things to all of us at different times.

Great observation, and so true. Not that I'm putting myself in any league with a lyricist, but sometimes, the inspiration for something and the result are in completely different places. Just as an example, I've posted a few poems in the creative works forum and people have seen things in them that I never even thought of. That's what's so great about words and music. People coming from all perspectives. It's the mood, the feeling and the emotion that drive me when I read lyrics or listen to music.

Hahah...so true. Layne Staley said Man in the Box was inspired by a discussion over lunch about vegetarians. It can start one way but end up in a completely different plane. It's that journey that is so cool.

Sorry for the double post, but I had to include this Alice song as well. Right to the point, as usual, heheh

Nutshell

We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home

Oooh...oooh...
Oooh...oooh...

My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can’t be my own
I’d feel better dead

Oooh...oooh...
Oooh...oooh...

Here is some further AIC lyrics this one written by Jerry Cantrall, whether he was better then Layne is open to discussion. This would be my fav AIC song! :)

Bury me softly in this womb
I give this part of me for you
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers
In a tomb.....in bloom

Down in a hole and I don't know
If I can be saved
See my heart I decorate it
Like a grave
You don't understand who they
Thought I was supposed to be
Look at me now now a man
Who won't let himself be

Repeat Chorus

Down in a hole and they've put all
The stones in their place
I've eaten the sun so my tongue
Has been burned of the taste
I have been guilty
Of kicking myself in the teeth
I will speak no more
Of my feelings beneath

Oh I want to be inside of you

Down in a hole, losing my soul
Down in a hole, feeling so small
Down in a hole, losing my soul
Down in a hole, out of control

I'ld like to fly but my
Wings have been denied

Its ashame the way everyone takes away there private lives. These guys its a job just like we go to work everyday so do they. I understand why they get so upset (example: I am in the middle of a divorce and everyone is trying to find out what happend and it is really annoying me and if I have a friend everyone things its a realationship and all kind of things. and I am nobody compared to these guys so when every priors into scott's life I can see how upset he would get. He is a cute guy with problems like all of us. I think Scott is one of the cuties guys I ever seen but its his life we are just fans :mad1: :mad1:
